Bird Says She Will Challenge Tom Miller for Attorney General

DES MOINES, Iowa – Guthrie County Attorney Brenna Bird launched her campaign on Tuesday to be Iowa’s next Attorney General. The prosecutor and former Counsel to Governor Terry Branstad will challenge incumbent Democrat Tom Miller.

Miller announced he would run for an 11th term in September.

“Over the last few months, I’ve heard from Iowans across our state about the need for new leadership in the Attorney General’s office,” Bird said. “Tom Miller has become a roadblock in the fight to defend Iowans against the authoritarianism of the Biden administration. As Attorney General, I will work every day to protect our constitutional rights and the freedoms we cherish.”

Bird said that her experience working with Governor Branstad to fight back against the Obama administration was a key factor in her decision to run.

“Iowa can’t take three more years of Biden mandates.  We need to stand up to the authoritarian Biden administration and hold them accountable to our Constitution,” she added.

“Iowans deserve an attorney general who will take action to stop Joe Biden and the radical socialists in DC. On everything from EPA regulations that crush Iowa’s farmers, to authoritarian mandates, to advocating defunding the police, the Biden Democrats are wrong. It is incredibly frustrating to watch Tom Miller sitting on the sidelines when we have so much at stake. In other states, attorneys general defend the people of their state.”

Bird continued, “I never thought Washington could do any worse than during the Obama years – but I was wrong. Less than a year into the Biden administration, the radical socialists have taken over the government and our fundamental freedoms are at greater risk than ever before. Governor Reynolds needs a partner in the Attorney General’s office to help lead this fight – right now. That’s why we need to remove Tom Miller, the main roadblock to putting Iowans first.”

Findley was elected county attorney in Guthrie County in 2018 and has been a prosecutor since 2016, and in that time she said she helped keep Iowa families safe by getting criminals off the street, advocating for victims of crime, and standing up for law enforcement. She is the president-elect of the Iowa County Attorney Association. Bird (then Brenna Findley) also served as chief of staff and legal counsel for Congressman Steve King until returning to Iowa in 2010 in an unsuccessful campaign against Miller for Attorney General.

Findley was born and raised on an Iowa farm where she was homeschooled. She graduated from Drake University and received her Juris Doctorate at the University of Chicago. She lives on the family farm in rural Dexter with her husband Bob, an Iraq war veteran, and their son. She is a member of All Saints Church.
