DES MOINES, Iowa – Attorney General of Iowa Brenna Bird last Friday announced Iowa joined a ten state coalition’s lawsuit challenging the Biden Administration’s second attempt to cancel federal student loan debt.
Bird took the Biden Administration to court as part of a 2022 lawsuit challenging his first attempt to cancel student loan debt. The lawsuit accused the Biden administration of illegally canceling $430 billion in student loans, putting American taxpayers on the hook to pay for it. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Biden Administration’s plan violated federal law affirming that President Joe Biden can’t mass cancel student debt without Congress passing a law.
The second lawsuit challenges the second attempt to cancel more than $160 billion worth of federal student loan debt.
“American taxpayers are paying the price for Biden’s student debt cancellation,” Bird said. “Many Iowans work hard to pay off their debt or start a family, join the military, or go straight into the work force. They should not have to foot the bill for someone else’s loans. This is nothing more than a desperate attempt to buy votes in the November election. And since he did not learn the first time we sued him, we have to take Biden back to court. With this lawsuit, we will fight to uphold the law and protect hard-working Iowan taxpayers.”
The lawsuit makes the case that the President does not have the authority to overall student debt repayment plans that puts taxpayers on the hook for more than $160 billion.
Iowa joined the Kansas-led lawsuit that includes the states of Alabama, Alaska, Idaho, Louisiana, Montana, Nebraska, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah.
