DES MOINES, Iowa – Gov. Kim Reynolds announced that the special election in Iowa House District 37 will be held on Tuesday, September 14, 2021. The announcement follows the death of State Rep. John Landon, R-Ankeny, as Iowa law requires a special election to be called within five days following a vacancy in the Iowa legislature.

Iowa Democrats lose first in the nation status

Democrats targeted Iowa House District 37 in 2020 with approximately $1.2 million raised for that race alone.

Landon defeated Andrea Phillips in 2020 by 6.4 percent, the same candidate he defeated by 15 points in 2016. His race in 2018 was much closer, winning by 4.1 points, but he ran ahead of Reynolds who won by 3.1 points.

Republicans currently enjoy a 1500 registered voter advantage, a smaller advantage than what Republicans saw in 2020.
