Burkhardt, Haar Advance in Johnston’s City Council Special Election

Bryan Burkhardt and Adam Haar were the top two candidates in a primary special election for a Johnston city council seat left vacant after Scott Syroka resigned.

JOHNSTON, Iowa – Bryan Burkhardt and Adam Haar were the two top vote-earners in Johnston’s primary special election on Tuesday.

The results, according to the Polk County Auditor’s office, are:

  1. Bryan Burkhardt – 39.08 percent (682 votes)
  2. Adam Haar – 23.04 percent (402 votes)
  3. Jim Gorsche – 20.06 percent (350 votes)
  4. Brei Johnson – 17.82 percent (311 votes)

Burkhardt is a professor and department chair at Des Moines Area Community College and owns CognitiveCooperative, a consulting business. He graduated from Johnston High School and Iowa State University. He moved back to Johnston in 2005 and resides there with his wife Betsy, an elementary teacher in Johnston, and their two children.

Haar is a data analytic consultant for Wells Fargo and has previously worked for the state government as a labor market analytic consultant for Iowa Workforce Development and Research Coordinator for State Public Defender’s office. He is an Iowa State University graduate. Haar has lived in Johnston for six years with his wife Kristin and their special needs daughter. 

The special election is required to fill a vacant city council spot after Councilman Scott Syroka resigned in March to take a position with the Biden-Harris Administration. A primary was needed since there were more than two candidates in a race. Burkhardt and Harr advance to the special election on Tuesday, June 22.
