Republicans in the Iowa Senate will hold a 34 to 16 majority when the 90th General Assembly gavels in for the 2023 session.

Republicans had a key pick-up in Senate District 1. Rocky De Witt defeated incumbent State Senator Jackie Smith, D-Sioux City, with over ten percent of the vote.

Democrats saw a victory in Senate District 14 when State Senator Sarah Trone Garriott, D-West Des Moines, defeated Senate President Jake Chapman, R-Adel, by 875 votes in a race where Iowa Republicans and Iowa Democrats collectively spent over $1.3 million.

In a hotly contested race in Ankeny, State Rep. Michael Bousselot, R-Ankeny, defeated his Democratic opponent Todd Brady by almost two percent of the vote.

Republicans knocked off another incumbent when State Senator Dawn Driscoll, R-Williamsburg, defeated State Senator Kevin Kinney by eight percent in Senate District 46.

Iowa House Republicans are poised to have a 64 to 36 majority in 2023.

In some critical races for the Iowa House, Republican Robert Hendersen defeated incumbent State Rep. Steve Hansen, D-Sioux City, by almost 15 percent in Hosue District 2.

Former Congressman David Young, R-Van Meter, defeated Democrat Sonya Heitshusen in House District 28.

Republican attorney and homeschooling advocate Bill Gustoff won a close race against Democrat MacKenzie Bills and Libertarian Jeni Kadel in House District 40 with 49.79 percent of the vote.

State Rep. Eddie Andrews, R-Johnston, won re-election in a tight race in House District 43 by over 350 votes receiving no support from the Republican Party of Iowa.

Republicans picked up a newly drawn Iowa House District 46 in Urbandale, with Dan Gehlbach beating his Democrat opponent, Bridget Carberry Montgomery.

Republican Mike Vondran defeated State Rep. Phyllis Thede, R-Bettendorf, in House District 94.

Matthew Rinker currently leads State Rep. Dennis Cohoon, D-Burlington, by 769 votes, with votes yet to count in House District 99.

Democrats won two races in Ankeny. Molly Buck defeated Marvis Landon, the widow of the late Republican State Rep. John Landon, in House District 41 by 130 votes.

State Rep. Garrett Gobble, R-Ankeny, was defeated by former Democratic State Rep. Heather Matson of Ankeny in House District 42 in a rematch of their 2020 race. Matson won by 24 votes, so there will likely be a recount.

Two other races in House District 20 and 81 are close enough that they will likely have a recount.
