Hinson: Biden’s ‘check the box’ border visit

Ashley Hinson: American lives are on the line if Joe Biden doesn’t secure the border. Does he care enough to do something about it?

U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa, represents Iowa's 2nd Congressional District.

In September of 2022, Jose Antonio Ibarra crossed the border illegally and was released into the United States on parole due to “lack of detention space.”

In August of 2023, Ibarra was arrested in New York for acting in a manner to injure a child. He was released because of New York City’s sanctuary city policies restricting law enforcement from complying with immigration enforcement.

Last week, Ibarra was arrested for murdering University of Georgia nursing student, Laken Riley, while she was out for a jog.

Laken Riley should be alive today. She should be completing her studies, enjoying college with her friends, and spending time with her family. This was a preventable tragedy; her blood is on the hands of President Biden and sanctuary city jurisdictions who carelessly released this criminal alien into our communities. This monster should have never been allowed to step foot in our country in the first place, much less allowed back onto the streets after arrest.

The consequences of Biden’s open border policies are deadly, and Laken Riley isn’t the only victim. Earlier this month, an illegal immigrant was arrested in Louisiana for raping a 14-year-old girl and repeatedly stabbing a man during a burglary. Another illegal immigrant was just arrested in DC – yet another sanctuary jurisdiction – for murdering a two-year-old. In Virginia, an illegal immigrant was recently charged for sexually assaulting a minor. These horrifying examples are just from the month of February alone. There are countless other stories of American lives lost to fentanyl, cartel violence, and assaults by illegal immigrants – a heartbreaking consequence of Biden’s negligent open border policies. Sadly, Iowa families have also endured the heartbreak of losing loved ones at the hands of illegal immigrants.

As a mom, I can’t imagine the pain these parents feel. Their worlds have been needlessly shattered because Joe Biden doesn’t have the backbone to close the border and protect Americans. All these families have is the highlight reel of Joe Biden taking vacations in Delaware, hitting ice cream shops, and telling the press the border is secure – after he took over 60 executive actions to incentivize illegal immigration and allow criminal aliens to roam our streets.

Under Joe Biden, every state is a border state. Moms everywhere now have to worry about their kids riding bikes around the neighborhood or their daughters going on a jog where they should be safe.

Joe Biden started this border crisis, and he has the authority to end it. He went to the Southern Border yesterday. If he wants to make this trip more than a box to check during an election year, he should fully reinstate Remain in Mexico, restart wall construction, and end catch and release to ensure violent criminals like Ibarra are not allowed to illegally enter our country and murder Americans.

There is no question that American lives are on the line if Joe Biden doesn’t secure the border. The only question is, does he care enough to do something about it?
