Feenstra: Iran is no friend of the United States

Randy Feenstra: "A weaker Iran constitutes a stronger United States and a more secure globe – for all."

Feenstra: Iran is no friend of the United States

Iran has a long and repulsive history of funding terrorism, including the recent attacks by Hamas against the innocent people of Israel. In 1984, Iran was rightfully named a state sponsor of terrorism by the United States and, to this day, continues to finance terror, murder, and crime across the Middle East and around the globe. For decades, Iran has funded terrorist plots by Hamas, Hezbollah, and other despicable organizations to destabilize nations, kill innocent people, and sow division. In Congress, I am working with my colleagues to hold Iran accountable for its criminal schemes and promote peace and security worldwide.

Following Hamas’ brutal attack on Israel, I quickly teamed up with my colleague from Texas – Rep. August Pfluger – to urge President Biden to immediately freeze the $6 billion in funds that he authorized for Iran. Iran’s support of Hamas is despicable, and that’s why we must never allow another dollar to be sent to Iran. The United States must never tolerate regimes that fund terrorism, and this legislation will achieve that goal.

I also joined forces with my colleague from Michigan – Rep. Bill Huizenga – to introduce the No U.S. Financing for Iran Act, which would sever Iran from our financial system and protect American taxpayers from funding murderous regimes. More specifically, this legislation would prevent the U.S. Department of the Treasury from authorizing financial transactions to Iran, prohibit the International Monetary Fund from offering financial aid to Iran, and ban the Export-Import Bank from financing the Iranian government. The United States must never deploy taxpayer dollars to Iran and its corrupt government ever again. By draining Iran’s bank accounts, we can begin to crush their influence and protect innocent people from Iranian-sponsored terrorism.

Additionally, I’m working with my colleague from Arizona – Rep. David Schweikert – on the Fortify Israel Act. In light of Hamas’ barbaric attacks on the innocent people of Israel, it’s critical that we deliver military and humanitarian aid to Israel. Our legislation would repurpose the $6 billion that President Biden recently authorized for Iran and instead redirect those funds to Israel. This proposal would also redirect any current or future assets seized from Iran by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to financially support Israel.

The United States is the most powerful nation on Earth, and it is our responsibility to use our influence to eliminate terrorists wherever they lurk and promote peace and prosperity for freedom-loving people everywhere. In Congress, I will continue to support policies that help Israel defeat Hamas and destroy Iran’s terror-sponsoring operations. Simply put, a weaker Iran constitutes a stronger United States and a more secure globe – for all.

We are government together, and your thoughts and opinions matter to me. Please contact my office at Feenstra.House.Gov or by phone at 202-225-4426 if I can ever be of assistance. I am proud to represent our families, farmers, main street businesses, and rural communities in Congress.
