DES MOINES, Iowa – State Rep. Chris Hall, D-Sioux City, announced on Tuesday that he will not run for re-election in the newly drawn Iowa House District 1. Hall was first elected to the Iowa House of Representatives and is currently serving his sixth term.
Hall currently represents Iowa House District 13, most of which is now in the new Iowa House District 2.
“It has been the honor of a lifetime to represent the people of Sioux City,” Hall said. “For twelve years, I have sought to be a voice of reason and tireless advocate for our community. I’ve sought to represent every voter in my district whether they supported me or not. Public service is not about grabbing a headline. It’s about doing the right thing in the face of headwinds and living by your word.”
Hall, 36, serves on the Appropriations, Commerce, Information Technology, and Natural Resources committees. He served as the ranking member of the Appropriations Committee from 2015 to 2021.
Hall won his second term to the Iowa House in 2012 after redistricting that placed him in the same district with incumbent State Rep. Jeremy Taylor, R-Sioux City, who he defeated by 795 votes. In Iowa House District 13 he consistently out-performed the top of the Democratic Party’s ticket by 24.6 percent.
“Representative Hall has served the people of Iowa with integrity and honor,” Iowa House Minority Leader Jenifer Konfrst, D-Windsor Heights, said. “During his tenure he has been a leading advocate for working families and taxpayer transparency. His work has improved the lives of thousands of Iowans. From striving for more fiscal accountability in government to standing up for those without a voice, Rep. Hall’s achievements are remarkable and his passion will be missed.”
Hall said he will miss serving in the legislature.
“I’ll miss the work and many friendships it has afforded, but it’s time for me to start the next chapter in life. I hope to keep near to public service in the years ahead and will always care deeply about the direction of my community and state,” he concluded.
No other incumbent was added to the new district, so Iowa House District 1 will have a race for an open seat.
