Montgomery County is the third county in as many weeks to adopt a sanctuary county resolution. Pottawattamie County adopted a similar resolution on December 28, 2021 and Cherokee County was the first county to adopt a resolution in 2022 on January 3.

A resolution declaring a county be a Second Amendment sanctuary does not negate federal law. It does prevent local resources from being used to enforce measures at odds with the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

“We would like to thank the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors for making the decision to support the Constitution and affirm their constituents’ Second Amendment rights,” Dave Funk, President of Iowa Firearms Coalition (IFC), said in a released statement. “Today’s vote moves us one step closer to all of Iowa becoming a Second Amendment Sanctuary State. We know our legislators in Des Moines are watching what is happening closely.”

Iowa Firearms Coalition, an affiliate of the National Rifle Association (NRA), is a 501(c4) nonprofit has been working with state and local elected officials to protect the right of Iowans to keep and bear arms in the wake of threats by some in Washington, D.C. to support actions they say would infringe upon the Second Amendment.

They ultimately would like the Iowa Legislature approve legislation declaring the entire state to be a sanctuary state. Gun rights advocates in Iowa had a banner year in 2021. The Iowa Legislature approved for the second time a “keep and bear arms” amendment to Iowa’s Constitution that will go before voters this fall. The Legislature also passed, and Gov. Kim Reynolds signed, a bills allowing permitless carry within the state and limits product liability lawsuits that target the firearms industry as a form of gun control.

Iowa’s Second Amendment Sanctuary Counties include: Mitchell, Chickasaw, Pocahontas, Hardin, Carroll, Jasper, Cedar, Washington, Madison, Mills, Adams, Clarke, Humboldt, Kossuth, Ringgold, Buchanan, Van Buren, Winnebago, Decatur, Dallas, Guthrie, Benton, Page, Lucas, Taylor, Union, Hancock, Buena Vista, Pottawattamie, Cherokee, Montgomery and Wayne.
