This week, the United States announced a full diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China. This is a small step toward holding the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) accountable and I fully support this decision.
The CCP leadership has committed mass atrocities and egregious human rights abuses that should completely disqualify them from obtaining any position of leadership on the world stage, including being a host country for the Olympic Games.
Many of us are well aware of one of their most heinous abuses against humanity: religious and ethnic minorities in their own country. The CCP’s treatment of ethnic Uyghur Muslims in China’s Xinjiang Province through forced sterilization, labor camps and torture, social credit scores, and in the most extreme of cases reports of alleged human organ harvesting, is absolutely appalling and abhorrent.
Taking a strong position against the CCP displays our continued commitment to Taiwan in the face of recent acts of aggression and threats to its independence.
My heart goes out to the citizens of Hong Kong as they continue their fight for freedom against the oppressive Communist regime. You are not alone; we will continue to stand with the citizens of Hong Kong as they continue to push against CCP oppression.
Finally, the evidence suggesting that the CCP withheld information from world health officials about the COVID-19 outbreak until it was too late to put any measures in place to contain its spread has resulted in millions of preventable deaths worldwide. To this day, the CCP continues to withhold critical information on the origins of this deadly disease that would help the international community better understand COVID-19 and respond to future outbreaks.
Since taking office, I have proudly stood with Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Uyghurs against the CCP’s aggression and human rights abuses by supporting the Promoting Ties with Taiwan Act, H. Res 812 that supports the diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Olympics, the Combating the Persecution of Christians in China Act, and the Uyghur Policy Act of 2021.
We must continue to stand against the CCP’s oppression and aggression. To those being persecuted, you are not alone. We stand with you.
