Grassley Criticizes Senate Democrats After SCOTUS Dismisses ACA Lawsuits

Chuck Grassley: "It's a fool's errand to predict how any judge will rule, and I expect Supreme Court Justices to rule according to the law —not based on some preferred outcome."

U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley (Official Portrait 2017)

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley, the ranking member on the Senate Judiciary Committee, criticized Senate Democrats who attacked Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett during their confirmation hearings after their appointment by former President Donald Trump.

The Supreme Court ruled 7 to 2 to dismiss the pending lawsuits against the Affordable Care Act based on the plaintiffs’ lack of standing. Kavanaugh and Coney Barrett joined the majority.

“Last fall when the Senate was considering Justice Barrett’s nomination for the court, my Democratic colleagues tried to sow a tale of demise for the ACA and health care as we know it in order to block an eminently qualified and fair-minded jurist from a seat on the high court and affect the upcoming election. They directly imputed that the justice was nominated for that express purpose, and knew better. They lied, lied, lied,” Grassley said in a released statement.

“(Wednesday’s) decision by the court, supported by Justice Barrett and Justice Kavanaugh, exposes those Democrats’ lies for what they were: a political gambit and sacrifice of their own integrity. The Democrat narrative was spun up to mislead and spread fear. It was false. As I said at the time, it’s a fool’s errand to predict how any judge will rule, and I expect Supreme Court Justices to rule according to the law—not based on some preferred outcome.

“My colleagues on the other side of the aisle owe the American people an explanation for their misleading tactics. Their sordid track record of predicting doom any time the Senate considers a nominee from a Republican president ought to serve as a reflection of their credibility during future nomination debates,” Grassley concluded.
