DES MOINES, Iowa — At a backyard event on Tuesday evening, Cory McAnelly launched his bid for Des Moines City Council’s 3rd Ward. The announcement followed a service project on Kingman Boulevard where attendees will make improvements to the flowerbed in the median.
Ward 3 consists of the southwest quadrant of Des Moines. The borders are the Des Moines River and then SW 3rd St until Park Avenue and then extends down SW 9th St. to the southern city limits at County Line Road. The northern boundary is University Ave.
A Drake neighborhood resident, McAnelly says he’s excited about using the campaign as an opportunity to lift up voices across Des Moines.
“We’re going to bring a broad coalition together to share why we love Des Moines and how we can continue to improve our community,” McAnelly said. “That’s a big reason I look forward to serving my neighbors. I want to open space for real conversations about growing and expanding small businesses, creating good paying jobs, making our neighborhoods safe, and ensuring Des Moines is affordable for everyone.”
McAnelly’s campaign has already received hundreds of pledges of support from neighbors, business owners, and community leaders.
“It’s important a Council Member embraces their community and has an innate passion for making it better,” said Cory’s neighbor Jenn Tuetken. “I’m glad to see Cory run because I know he’s invested in everything he puts his heart into — from his garden to those he serves. He’s naturally a collaborative guy who listens and cares about safety, equity, and opportunity.”
“Cory is a leader and a guy that gets things done. He has had nothing handed to him and built himself up from nothing. His skillset is well suited for the challenges Des Moines faces. He will work very hard for the folks he will serve in Ward 3. Cory listens to all sides of an issue and then makes a well-reasoned decision. I am excited about what he adds to this city and can contribute as a new voice on the Council.” J.B. Conlin said.
McAnelly is the Past President of the Des Moines Public Library Foundation, serves on the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus Board of Managers, and is a Board Member with the Drake University Law School Recent Alumni Engagement Board. McAnelly is a Principal employee and volunteers at the company’s charity events. Cory and his partner, Lauren, reside in the Drake neighborhood in Des Moines.
Des Moines Ward 3 is currently represented by Josh Mandelbaum. The city non-partisan general election is on Tuesday, November 2, 2021. The filing deadline for candidates is on September 16, 2021.
